It’s couture week in Paris, which means fashion’s boundaries are pushed to the max – shoulder pads are thick enough to be mistaken for a Tempurpedic pillow, ruffles engulf evening wear and celebrities flock to front rows, hoping their look makes the biggest statement. One of the mainstays of the trend-setting team is Bella Hadid, who arguably has more influence in her wardrobe choices off the runway than on it. According to Bella Hadid and Balenciaga, baggy jeans will only get baggier. Can anyone check if Hadid has a side gig as a superhero or mad scientist? Her latest look seems to defy the laws of gravity.
In the span of a few hours, Bella Hadid rocked three completely different Balenciaga looks, giving us two street style moments and one incredible runway look. Bella Hadid was one of the standout models from the Balenciaga show (and wore my favorite look from the collection), but she certainly had stiff competition with a slew of pop culture icons like Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa and Nicole Kidman also walking in the parade. . I don’t know what inspired this celebrity spin-off America’s Next Top Model, but I absolutely live for it.
Bella Hadid’s first look of the day was sporty, simple and perfectly in tune with the model’s typical clothing choices. Hadid wore a one-piece workout shorts set with a quilted vest that inspired me to include vests as an unexpected addition to my summer fashion mood board. She paired the look with crinkled white socks and Burberry sneakers. Since Hadid was entering the Balenciaga sphere, it was only fitting that she accessorize with a black Le Cagole Balenciaga shoulder bag.
After the show (and a nice walk down the runway in a strapless green dress), Bella Hadid emerged in a brand new ensemble. Jeans, a crop top, a black jacket and sunglasses: the look would be considered simple if it weren’t for the extreme proportions of the outfit.
For starters, Bella Hadid’s Balenciaga jeans are almost unbelievably baggy, taking the low-rise trend to a whole new (low) level. The ultra-wide jeans have a faded distressed wash that gives them a vintage feel (though I’m not sure when these gravity-defying pants have existed before) and they miraculously hug Hadid’s hips without a belt. Tailoring is all about tailoring, and the theme hasn’t been lost on these jeans. But it’s the crotch – which hits mid-thigh – that creates the optical illusion low-rise effect of the pants.
To accentuate the extremely baggy look, Bella Hadid paired her jeans with a skintight white crop top that further elongated her torso. The addition of a black Balenciaga jacket and pointed pumps completes the sporty-chic spirit of the look.
And of course, it’s impossible to ignore Hadid’s intergalactic sunglasses. While Hadid typically opts for tiny shades (and can be credited with bringing the Y2K trend to your face and Instagram feed), she’s switched things up with an over-the-top pair of shield sunglasses. Futuristic hues have become a Balenciaga staple and Bella Hadid was one of many celebrities to pull the look off the catwalk.
