Crop Tops, Doc Martens and Miniskirts? It’s a brand new Natalie Portman

At 41, and with a string of Hollywood movies under her belt, not to mention an Oscar, two Golden Globes and a BAFTA, Natalie Portman knows how to dress for the spotlight. Fluffy dresses were once her favorite, but recently the mother-of-two has orchestrated something of a style reboot. Currently on promotion Thor: Love and ThunderPortman brought a fresh, youthful energy to his appearances, crop tops and Doc Martens included.
Polish designer Magda Butrym, whose edgy fans include Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski and Lady Gaga, seems to be the key to Portman’s updated wardrobe. For the premiere of pachinko, the actor wowed in a striking red mini dress and matching tailored blazer, puffed up with Anita Ko jewelry and a Dior Caro bag. The bold hue was sexy, but the silhouette kept things classic and classy.
Butrym was also behind the LBD that Portman wore Jimmy Kimmel live, which featured a neck flower bodice and a cutout chest, as well as the crochet bra that peeked out from under her pink cotton candy Miu Miu separates at a Thor photo call in Rome.
Every premiere and press conference on the promotional runway has seen Portman deliver an unexpected look. Perhaps inspired by her co-star Tessa Thompson, famous for her fashion risk-taking, Portman sought out outfits as impactful as her character’s superpowers.
For further proof of Portman’s new direction, see the puffy mini she chose to premiere in London for Thor, whom she wore with a floral crown which reminded her Black Swan days, or the sequined Celine mini dress she wore on the LA leg of the tour.
His most surprising choice? The clueless– a plaid skirt and blazer inspired by Dior, which she wore over a crop top to join Thompson at a junket. Portman channeled the 90s classic’s main character, Cher Horowitz, while Thompson’s outfit had shades from her BFF, Dionne.
We watch Natalie’s wardrobe evolution with interest. More Magda, please.
