How to branch out from skinny jeans

We love our skinny jeans as much as the next girl (and we’re always determined to “just say no” to the return of low-rise jeans), but we’re super excited about the wide variety of other trendy denim styles at the moment. This season, you can easily access a diverse selection of heights, fits and washes to suit nearly every body type and every occasion. To celebrate all things denim, we enlisted the help of Nashville stylist Ramsey Corn of Ramsey Style to explore some of this year’s trends and get some expert advice on buying and styling them. And, what better backdrop to celebrate a season of new fashion trends than Nashville’s Cheekwood Estate & Gardens? (During peak tulip season, no less!)

Spring 2022 denim trends + how to style them

Don’t worry, we won’t tell you to throw away your favorite skinny jeans. (We love ours too.) But it’s time to think outside the box and embrace some new styles. As we bring you a series of on-trend looks, we’ll share Ramsey’s essential tips for styling this year’s jeans. His first golden rule? “There are jeans for everyone!” she insists. “But it can be a workout. And there are some styles right now that look intimidating on the hanger, but they’re fitted through the waist and hips and actually very flattering. As you shop, rest assured there are jeans for you, and most importantly, keep an open mind!

Three more tips to take with you to the dressing room:

  • Don’t be afraid to tuck in your top. No matter what size your jeans are, exposing the waistline will accentuate your figure. Although it may seem counter-intuitive to some, covering your waistline entirely can sometimes make you look more “boxed” overall. Depending on the look you want, you can opt for a relaxed French tuck, with only the front of your top tucked in – or a full tuck. The dealer’s choice!
  • It’s all about contrast. If you’re wearing jeans with a distressed knee or frayed hem, consider a dressier top to elevate the look. The same goes for the choice of colors. While lighter washes tend to be more versatile, Ramsey recommends a lighter top with dark jeans to make the outfit stand out.
  • The length is important. When trying on jeans, think about the shoes you’ll be wearing. Are you a heel girl or do you prefer flats? Short styles lend themselves well to both flats and heels – and it’s a great way to show off the shoes you love. On the other hand, if you are looking for a wide or flared style that you want to wear for a long time, you should plan to pair them with either heel. or apartments. Keeping your favorite shoe in mind, choose a length that won’t skim the ground.

Look #1

In her debut look, Ramsey styled Anne Elizabeth in a pair of cropped ankle jeans, an accessible option if you’re particularly comfortable in your skinny jeans – this style is similar but more relaxed. This particular pair from RE/DONE features a distressed knee and frayed hem; the cut lands just at Anne Elizabeth’s ankle, making it perfect for showing off some on-trend sneakers. Ramsey balanced this laid-back denim style with a classic white button-up shirt tucked only in the front for an effortlessly chic effect. Anne Elizabeth’s gold jewelry completes the look!

Remember: cropped ankle jeans are perfect for pairing with sneakers. Relaxed casual jeans and a pair of sneakers pair well with a classic button down shirt and simple jewelry. She is ready for anything !

Look #2

Here, Bailey’s look is built around a pair of “pant jeans” with a loose, relaxed fit. Length is especially important for wide-leg and flared jeans, as they are difficult to fold down. Go for cropped or extra-long jeans for these styles – don’t go middle of the road. If you prefer to wear it long, choose a length that is close to the ground but does not drag. With spring in mind, Ramsey paired these darker wash jeans with an alluring floral top and structured blazer in a warm beige tone. Elastic overlays like this are great for transitioning from casual office to happy hour on the patio – just lose the blazer!

Remember: long, wide or flared jeans can elongate your legs and flatter your curves. Choose a length that comes close to skimming the floor without dragging.

Mia is pictured here in another spring-appropriate blazer, a trend you’ll continue to see throughout the season. Cropped blazers like this can instantly elevate an otherwise casual look while accentuating your figure and showing off your jeans. Under her blazer, Mia wears a vegan leather bodysuit. Bodysuits are a fabulous way to get the most out of your jeans – they take the worry out of a top that slips out or inadvertently bares your midriff. (Many models of bodysuits also double as shapewear!)

Don’t forget: cropped cuts are great for showcasing your favorite shoes! Although frayed hemlines are currently all the rage, a classic hemline is timeless and ideal for creating “raised casual” looks.

Look #4

For this look, Bailey wears sleek high waisted jeans with a rolled hem and distressed knees (which she ended up buying after the photo shoot, by the way). These jeans are fantastic for casual spring and summer occasions, pairing well with tank tops and simple tees or flirty blouses like the off the shoulder top pictured here. Cuffed jeans are incredibly versatile because they can be worn with just about any shoe. This look is the ultimate day-to-evening style for spring – wear flat sandals for a day of shopping; put on heels for a night out!

Remember: relaxed fits like this are fabulous for transitioning from day to night! Pair it with flat sandals during the day, then slip on some heels to instantly elevate the look for a night out. This particular pair can be worn cuffed or not.

Look #5

These “boyfriend” jeans with a straight and relaxed fit are naturally cool. They’re also a perfect example of a style that may look intimidating on the hanger but is actually quite flattering, thanks to a tighter fit around the hips and waist. The slightly distressed and frayed hem gives edginess to otherwise feminine details – a ruffled Ulla Johnson blouse and a pair of Mia’s favorite heels. (Remember: contrast is key!)

Remember: denim shopping can be a workout, so make sure you’ve had your coffee and are ready for the challenge! Some styles can look menacing on the hanger, but it’s essential to keep an open mind. As you try things on, imagine them with your favorite pieces. (Cropped or cuffed styles are great for showing off on-trend footwear.)
