Love it or hate it, low rise styles are back.
The return of the Y2K fit was ushered in by the now infamous Miu Miu mini skirt seen on everyone from Nicole Kidman to Zendaya, before taking on a denim form on the catwalks of Missoni, Diesel and Blumarine (for n to name a few).
Now, the hip style has become a seemingly must-have, making its way into the wardrobes of our favorite models and celebrities, and into every major department store.
Coming from an era that perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards and glorified ultra-thin figures, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve regressed into a state of bodily exclusivity.
However, Paloma Elsesser’s industry-acclaimed iD cover reminded us that trends should be yours and above all, it’s about wearing what you want and love with confidence.
While the drop-waist style has been notoriously associated with tiny cropped tops, which only further polarizes the trend, that doesn’t mean it’s the only fashionable way to wear it.
In fact, Miu Miu’s Paris Fashion Week FROW showed style lovers how it’s done, layering key pieces over and under other styles, from oversized shirts to frayed knits.
Below, we’ve rounded up the best way to style low-rise pieces without flashing your entire torso.
Balance the baggy
If the Fall/Winter 22 shows at Dion Lee and Versace were anything to go by, corsets are here to stay, and thankfully, because they make the perfect figure-flattering top to pair with low-rise jeans.
Fitted tops that cinch the waist and cropped sweaters that show skin without stripping will work to balance loose, low-rise bottoms.

Christopher Esber Low Rise Wool Trousers, $695 at THE ICONIC
Lie Boys Corset, $186 at REVOLVE
Layer, layer, layer
Showing off your underwear might seem like an antiquated move in your desire to make the trend slightly more conservative, but Bella Hadid proved otherwise.
The model was seen layering high-waisted underwear and tights under jeans and low-rise skirts in a look that covers the stomach while maintaining a sleek silhouette.
During Paris Fashion Week, famous Miu Miu low-rise pieces were layered over white shirts and high-waisted briefs.
Anja Oversized Shirt, $260 at SIR
Chantelle Soft Stretch Three-Pack Jersey Briefs, $68 at Net-A-Porter
100 Denier Opaque No-Hug Tights, $19.95 at BONDS
It’s not about how low you can go
If you’re not ready to reach for the lowest of lows, from a sartorial point of view, going for a mid-rise cut in a larger size that can be worn high above the hips and cover the lower belly is a great starting point.
Styles with a V-shaped waist that sits above or on the hips and ties at the lower tummy can also be ultra-flattering as they elongate the torso.
Lioness La Mesa Pants, $89 at THE ICONIC
Preston Skirt, $240 at Meow
