‘I compared size 10 jeans from Marks and Spencer, Primark, H&M and New Look – 1 pair was basically a whole size smaller’ – Amber-Louise Large

Women’s clothing is notoriously bad when it comes to sizing, with shoppers (myself included) often getting different sizes in different stores.

The thing I hate shopping the most is jeans. Too tight, too loose, too flimsy…the whole experience can be a nightmare.

And the sizing issue makes it even more stressful. I think today I’m around a size 10, but that doesn’t mean all size 10s will fit.

A size 10 can look very different depending on the store, as I found out when comparing size 10 skinny jeans from Marks and Spencer, H&M, Primark and New Look.

Marks and Spencer – The Ivy (Supersoft Skinny High Rise) in size 10 regular – £29.50

M&S jeans were the largest in size 10

I have to start by saying how comfortable the denim was. M&S knows quality. These were the priciest of the skinny jeans – but we’re mainly looking at sizing here.

This size 10 was the biggest size of the four pairs of jeans I tried on, but it fits me. They didn’t seem too big, but I had room in them (ie they didn’t feel like they were stuck together), which made them even more comfortable.

Lengthwise they fit me (I’m about 5’6), reaching down to the ankle.

New Look – Hallie (high waist super skinny) in size 10 – €25.99

New Look jeans were a bit tighter than M&S jeans

The New Look jeans were a little tighter than the M&S ones but not so much.

They still felt like a size 10, just a little tighter.

Not too drastic a change from the M&S jeans and again a nice length for me at 5’6 tall.

H&M – Full length high waist skinny in size 10 – €17.99

Size 10 H&M was similar to size 10 New Look

H&M was very similar to New Look jeans in size.

Even if they were less skinny on the legs, it’s probably more down to the style than the size.

In length they were good and they didn’t sag anywhere even though they weren’t as tight as the New Look pair.

Primark – High waist skinny in size 10 – €10

It was hard to put on the Primark jeans

Trying on the size 10 Primark jeans was a experience.

We talk, I had to lie down to put them on and really squirm in them.

I got stuck trying to get them over my heel because they were so tight. It didn’t matter because they stretched but it was the size that shocked me.

The sizes of M&S and Primark jeans were very different

It was much smaller than the size of other jeans, especially M&S.

I just about fitted them but as someone who hovers between a size 8 and a size 10 they felt more like an 8.

They weren’t comfortable and were definitely much smaller than other pairs.

final verdict

Primark jeans were the smallest

Size 10 from Marks and Spencer had the most room, while H&M and New Look were quite similar in size.

The Primark jeans, however, felt an entire size smaller than the others.

They are a good price for £10 but I guess if you buy jeans from Primark take a size up.

Of course, sizing can even differ between styles of jeans within the same store, so it’s probably worth trying on several different sizes. It sounds silly, but here we are…
