Jean Paul Gaultier and Lotta Volkova’s collaboration includes conical dresses and tops

Jean Paul Gaultier’s newest collection for his ready-to-wear line has arrived, and it’s bringing back a retro goodie: the iconic conical velvet dress from 1984. The brand has partnered with a rotating roster of designers every season, and for her latest drop, powerhouse stylist Lotta Volkova brought her own take on some JPG favorites.

« Discovering Jean Paul Gaultier and Antoine de Caunes presenting their TV show Eurotrash was one of the first fashion memories for me. What struck me was the extreme eccentricity, uncompromising vision, wit and endless celebratory celebration of fashion, culture, music and underground cultures that all formed a world extraordinary by Jean Paul Gaultier,” Volkova said in an official statement. “It was an incredible honor to be able to explore the archives, obsess and fetishise – reimagining Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic collections in the context of 2022 by reintroducing them into a contemporary wardrobe.”

This is Volkova’s second fashion collaboration, having worked with Adidas on a collection in 2020. The designer first came to industry attention while working in-house at Vetements, then moved on is then associated with Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga. Currently, she is the sartorial mastermind behind the hottest looks introduced on the runway, including Miu Miu, Blumarine and 1017 ALYX 9SM.

For Jean Paul Gaultier, Volkova applied her natural ability to give nostalgic fashion pieces a modern update, including corset-inspired undergarments, trompe-l’oeil patterns (dresses, tops, bodysuits and “naked” bikinis), lingerie-style knitwear, tailored pieces with S&M-style details, and more.

The campaign for the collection was photographed by Johnny Dufort and not only features a group of dancers, artists and athletes modeling the collection, but the imagery pays homage Dimitri, the famous Volkova poodle on Instagram.
