Time was, Justin Bieber was a bit of a style pariah. QGThe Worst Dressed Man of 2019, the baby-faced singer was an early supporter of the Scumbro movement and was one of the first people to wear Crocs in public. His hair was messy – much like Boris Johnson’s, only worse – and most of his clothes were covered in stains.
Then the pandemic hit, and all of a sudden, Bieber’s shlumpy wardrobe of massive hoodies and tracksuit bottoms started looking as appealing as it was about to. Overnight, the “Sorry” star went from Beavis and Butthead-Additional-to-full style maven, appearing in Balenciaga campaigns wearing his trademark bulky layers, and even grabbing a blanket from American vogue alongside his wife Hailey.
Over the past few days, however, Bieber has shifted his sartorial focus in a surprising new direction. Leaving behind the streetwear-soaked drapery of his 2021 uniform, Biebs instead opted for a fitted, Y2k-soaked silhouette of cropped hoodies, high-rise bootcut jeans and oversized dad sneakers (still, dad sneakers).
Appearing on stage in the United States as part of his “Justice” World Tour, Bieber cut a lithe figure, pairing a cropped white hoodie with a tight vest and flared pants in Los Angeles; and an equally high-waisted gray hoodie with (we assume) the same vest, and a pair of red leather flared pants by British designer Ernest W. Baker, in Denver.
A rent boy from the 70s, hanging on the Castro; “Sexually Active Band Geek” part of the 2004 seminal Y2K film mean girlsBieber’s new look fits right into the e-boy aesthetic currently being pedaled by the likes of Evan Mock and Dominic Fike, but also the gucci-like flared cuts exemplified by Jared Leto and Harry Styles – which means exporting the Canada’s most famous may have styled her way to the top of the 2022 sartorial pyramid.
Beyond Bieber’s wardrobe, the cropped look has also been endorsed on the world’s most important catwalks. At Miu Miu, Ms. Prada placed high-cut bottoms and high-cut tops at the center of her SS/22 collection, at Fendi, Silvia Venturini showed cut suit jackets, truncated at the base of the lapel, and at Vetements, Guram Gvasalia presented technical jackets with hems that end just below the ribs.
