Low rise jeans are making a comeback and we don’t know if we’re ready

We knew ’90s fashion was making a comeback, and now one of its staples, low-rise jeans, is also making a comeback.

We thought we had seen it all, but fashion always has surprises in store for us. After cycling shorts, bucket hats and platform trainers, make way for low-rise jeans. This essential from the 2000s is making a comeback, in loose cuts to show off flat bellies and sculpted abs…. As for the others, we will pass.

Fashion is endless cycles, old is new and so on. That said, we thought learning from past mistakes was always part of the game, in order to get the most out of an on-trend wardrobe. But this is clearly not always the case. Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Izabel Goulart have been sporting a reboot of the Y2K style of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera for several weeks, in a baggy version with low-rise pants and a bra or crop top. The idea being that the more you see, the better.

We sensed that this trend was coming back, but, we admit, we didn’t want to believe it. The recent craze for 2000s fashion – and for Paris Hilton – would inevitably bring back the low waist, even extremely low models. But we didn’t expect it to resurface so quickly. On TikTok, young fashion addicts swear by low waist jeans with already more than 10 million views for the “low waist” hashtag.

And let’s face it, this trend will be accompanied by other collateral damage straight out of the 2000s, starting with the bare thong. Just take a look on Instagram to discover the two thongs, one on each side, coming out of jeans, baggy pants, or a low-rise tracksuit, that is to say when it’s not is not a gold chain. The return of the belly button piercing and the coiled butterfly tattoo on the lower back should be back soon to complete the look.
