Rickey Thompson’s favorite summer trends include crop tops and ’90s denim

It’s nearly impossible not to burst out laughing after watching one of Rickey Thompson’s comedy videos. Whether he’s sharing his skincare routine, dancing in his living room, or creating an impromptu fashion show in his bedroom, Thompson has a knack for taking seemingly mundane activities and suddenly making them hilarious. His Twitter bio says it simply, “I like to make people laugh, that’s all.”

But beyond the incessant laughter, Thompson is also —in his own iconic words—reserved and busy. More recently, he teamed up with Ax to find a date for teen vogue, which meant he was getting several epic, over-the-top proposals. “I was super excited about it because I had never received a proposal before,” Thompson said. Restlessness. “It was so much fun. When I heard that Ax was giving me the opportunity to give back to students who hadn’t been able to enjoy prom this year, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m at 100% depressed.”

Another key point of his daily agenda? Maintain your fitness program. “I practiced a lot to take my mind off things,” he says. “I want to look my best when we come out of quarantine. I get the blood flowing and feel so good right after.

The exercise, he explains, also puts him in the right headspace to stay creatively motivated — which is essential when you’re a big internet personality who needs to crank out new content as often as possible. He says his inspiration comes from “literally anything”.

“I’m going to look at a poster and I’m like, ‘This is something to talk about,'” he shares. “Or I’m just going to make music, and I really want to put people on a song, so I’m going to do a cute dance video to it. It’s so simple.”

And for Thompson, there’s no scripting or pre-planning involved in his production process. “I never schedule my videos,” he reveals. “It’s always: stall the phone, record, and that’s it. I’m like, ‘Anything that comes to mind, OK, cute.’ “

He also translates this fluid philosophy into his personal style. Below, Thompson walks Bustle through his favorite fashion trends of the moment, in addition to the look he says he wishes he could pull off (but, in all honesty, still manages to pull off anyway).

crop tops

Thompson’s signature item is arguably the crop top, which he frequently sports in his videos. “I love crop tops,” he says. “That’s definitely me all summer – maybe all year. I love wearing crop tops. I love them, love them, love them.

Fluid anything

The easy breeze is the way to go, especially as temperatures begin to rise. “I love, love, love wearing flowy summer clothes,” he says. “I love flowy shirts. I love flowy pants.

Matching sets

“They’re cute for summer because it’s hot,” says Thompson. “It’s so easy to put on the matching set. And I like the bright colors of summer: oranges, greens, pinks.

90s inspired flannel

When he’s into a fashion funk, Thompson looks to his favorite decade. “Right now I have a very specific uniform, and it’s 90s stuff,” he shares. “I want people to look at me and be like, ‘Oh my God, you look like you’re from a 90s teen movie.’

Low waist jeans

Thompson sometimes questions the denim essentials no one could escape in the early 2000s — even though it’s a fashion staple on her IG. “[They’re] the concept that even I can’t switch,” he shares. “I wish I could, but I just can’t.”
