Style Watch: Malaysian artist Dafi dresses his way

Music and fashion are often interconnected, with one influencing the other and vice versa. This is something Malaysian artist Gadaffi Ismail Sabri understands very well.

The 33-year-old singer, known as Dafi, believes the way he dresses can impact his career. It helps it stand out from the crowd.

Dafi is always keen to support local talent. Some of his favorite labels are Malaysian.

What is your vision of fashion? How do you see it playing a role in your life and career?

Fashion is an art form that allows you to express your individuality and creativity. It’s important in my everyday life because it sets me apart from other people and artists. Fashion can boost my confidence, especially when I’m able to find the perfect combination of clothes for the right time and place.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style depends on the occasion. On a daily basis, I am more casual. But when I’m working, I like to dress up and don’t mind stepping things up a notch or wearing something that’s even a little crazy. I think it’s an advantage that I have for being an artist, to be able to put something that an ordinary person can’t do – especially on stage.

What are your best fashion tips for your fans?

Dress to express, not to impress! Be yourself and wear what you are comfortable with. Your style may be different from others, but it doesn’t matter because art is subjective.

Tell us about your favorite fashion designers.

My number one choice is of course my brother-in-law, Jovian Mandagie. I have always enjoyed working with him, regarding his creativity and his creations. I also turn to him for fashion advice. That said, I’m a fan of the work of Rizman Ruzaini and Hatta Dolmat. Working with them has always been very satisfying.

What are your essential fashion accessories?

I believe accessories help enhance the look you are going for and make it more interesting. When I work, I usually wear a matching watch, bracelet and necklace. I have them in almost every color of the rainbow to match any outfit I wear.
