FRAME

This type of jeans is more tapered than straight jeans but looser than skinny jeans. Erica Ball, professional stylist and creator of Erica Ball Style, prefers them for women over 50 with an ankle-length hemline in a mid-to-dark blue wash. “These styles tend to be the most classic for women,” she says.

So where can you get a fabulous pair of slim-straight jeans? “I work with a lot of women between the ages of 40 and 65, and I find that they all love Frame brand jeans,” says Ball. “Frame jeans have more stretch than other brands and my customers like their comfort compared to other denims.” The brand offers high-rise and mid-rise jeans. “I find that my clients who have longer torsos and/or a ‘doggie mommy’ love the fit of high-waisted pairs,” she says. Try the brand’s Le Garcon Degradable jeans for a traditional style and the High Straight for an option with a raw hem.

Flared jeans are all the rage – and yes, women over 50 can have a blast. Plus, this style particularly flatters the common pear shape. “A pear shape is when your lower body is wider than your upper body,” explains Iryna Fedorchak, European-based fashion designer and founder of Filoso Fashion. “To balance this, I suggest flared jeans with a high waist to hide the belly and create an hourglass body shape.”

Another type of flared jeans you could try are mom jeans. This type of jeans flares out from the hip rather than the knee, says Fedorchak. “Mom jeans are not only the trendiest choice, but they also offer the most comfort.” Try the Madewell The Perfect Vintage Flare Jean for a classic style and the Agolde Riley High Rise Straight Crop for a mom jean style.

Levi’s

Boot-cut jeans take their name from their straight silhouette that can easily be worn over ankle boots. You can also wear them tucked into thigh high or thigh high boots if you prefer a looser fit than the classic skinny jeans. “A straight cut or a pair of boot-cut jeans will stretch the figure without emphasizing problem areas,” says Fedorchak. Pair it with a flared tunic, a v-neck top or a relaxed shirt with a French pleat. Levi’s Ribcage Bootcut jeans are a true classic.

This stable wardrobe borrowed from the boys is a wardrobe essential. “As a style coach and a woman over 50, the best silhouette for women over 50 is hands down boyfriend jeans (also known as slouch style or 90s style),” says the style coach. Kim Hasher. “These provide a fit through the waist and hips, then go looser through the legs. You can size up if you want an even looser fit.”

Hancher notes that boyfriend jeans offer a polished look and can be worn with a blazer, blouse and heels, or a graphic tee and tennis shoes. “This silhouette is versatile, comfortable and age-appropriate,” she says. “They allow a woman over 50 to play in today’s trend space and still look pulled together.” She recommends Everlane’s Rigid Slouch Jean, Gap’s Midrise Girlfriend Jeans and AG’s Ex-Boyfriend Slim.
